Biennial Community Psychology Conferences in Canada

The 2nd Canadian Community Psychology Conference 2012 took place May 4 – 6 and was hosted by Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo, Ontario (in partnership with the University of Ottawa, Université du Québec à Montréal, Université Laval, and the Adler School of Professional Psychology). The theme was justice and social change with a focus on issues concerning Aboriginal peoples. Cindy Blackstock, Executive Director of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada, and Dr. Joe Gone gave powerful individual keynote addresses on the injustices experienced by Aboriginal communities in both Canada and the United States. Other conference events included site visits and presentations from peer reviewed submissions that were offered in one of the following formats: ½-day workshops, posters, structured networking events, and sessions with TMT (Three-Minute-Thesis) presentations. This conference showcased the important work of current and future scholars in community psychology in Canada.

The foundation for a Canadian conference was laid by four previous conferences, specifically the “Ontario-Quebec Conference on Community Psychology” organized by the Université Laval, Université du Québec à Montréal, University of Ottawa, and Wilfrid Laurier University. Those conferences were held biennially from 2002 to 2008. In 2010 conference organizers expanded their call for submissions to a national forum resulting in the first biennial conference on community psychology in Canada. 

This special issue of the Global Journal of Community Psychology Practice includes a few presentations from the 2012 conference covering issues on housing, health, anti-bullying, and behavior change. A few of these studies focused on youth and various methods of evaluation and social advertising and social media marketing are presented.

We invite community psychology scholars and practitioners working in Canada to the 3rd Canadian conference in 2014.

Robb Travers is Associate Professor of Psychology, and has a background in both community psychology and public health sciences.
